S01E06 - The Crash Trail

Chris:

Welcome back to Legend Lunchbox. Last time, the crew attempted some basic ship repairs, only to learn that the S.S. Distress needs much more than a quick patch. Getting a better view of their surroundings, they spotted a few possible paths they can follow, including a distant tower, a cluster of buildings, or the crash trail left by their ship through the forest. They decide to head back along the crash trail, hoping to find useful pieces of the ship before something else does.

Guide (Chris):

Afternoon settles over the crash site. The large trees swing occasionally overhead in the slight breeze. You hear calls of unknown birds further up into the forest and see one of the little sap covered critters eyeing the ship before it disappears into the underbrush. You finally have an idea of how much of a mess the S.S. Distress is in. It will need work on multiple systems as well as major repairs to the hull to get it off the ground again.

Guide (Chris):

From above the tree line, you saw a tower on a distant ridge to the North and a collection of buildings further away to the Southeast. You also see the crash trail extending behind the ship off into the forest to the Southwest, and you see multiple supplies and bits of the Distress scattered in that direction.

Guide (Chris):

So you've got a few obvious leads. You haven't explored the crash trail, but you can see a lot of supplies and bits of the ship scattered on it. There was that old sign near the work tree that points off towards the north, and there was also some buildings further out. The ship seems stable for now.

Guide (Chris):

So what do you guys want to do next?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Have we danced lately? Have we danced? I just can't remember how long. That's what I do when I'm nervous.

Guide (Chris):

You guys had a dance party last night when you guys landed.

Squawk (Madeleine):

You're right. Okay. We can wait another day. Just, yeah. Just always my go to when there's...

Lysander (Jay):

Well, we could talk about it as we dance.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yeah.

Lysander (Jay):

We could have, like, a a, like, a ceremony.

Squawk (Madeleine):

We could we we I don't know if we have time for ceremonies. Should we vote on what to do?

Lysander (Jay):

We can vote, sure.

Rolo (Phil):

So we got the tower, we got the town, and we got the crash trail. Right?

CAM (Tito):

Mhmm.

Lysander (Jay):

That's right.

Rolo (Phil):

We gotta fix our ship. I think if we leave the ship, the sap squirrels are gonna come, and they're gonna take all our stuff, man. So I'm gonna go lock the doors.

Squawk (Madeleine):

So smart.

CAM (Tito):

Okay.

Lysander (Jay):

Okay.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I just wanna know we're gonna go see the fancy tower sometime.

Lysander (Jay):

Well, before you lock the doors, do you have the key to unlock it?

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. There's one here in the door.

Lysander (Jay):

Okay.

Rolo (Phil):

Here, I'll lock it here.

Guide (Chris):

Well, even if you don't have the key, there's holes in the hull. You can just...

Rolo (Phil):

I locked I locked the door, and then I go downstairs. And then I walk out the big gaping hole in the bottom and say, doors are locked.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Totally secure.

Rolo (Phil):

I got the key. I'll put it around my neck.

CAM (Tito):

Alright. You you hold on to that. Make sure you don't lose it.

Rolo (Phil):

Yep.

CAM (Tito):

Because we we can't get back in if you lose that.

Lysander (Jay):

It's the only one.

Rolo (Phil):

It's the only one.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I have a backpack if you need me to carry keys. I'd like to help.

CAM (Tito):

So while while he holds on to the key, you know, we probably need to start finding parts of the ship to fill the big hole that he just walked out of.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Because of squirrels. Yeah.

Rolo (Phil):

That's a good point.

CAM (Tito):

We don't want the squirrels to go in and and steal everything, so we gotta, you know, fix the hull so that nothing can get in there when we go looking at the town later on.

Rolo (Phil):

Okay. So let me just propose this. Should we take all the stuff from the ship with us right now so they can't take it when we're not here?

CAM (Tito):

That's gonna be kinda heavy.

Rolo (Phil):

Well, not all this stuff. I mean, like, this stuff that they could just like, there's some spoons in the kitchen. I could see them taking off with those spoons.

Squawk (Madeleine):

They're not gonna mess with the engine and stuff.

CAM (Tito):

Do you have a bag for the spoons?

Rolo (Phil):

Let me see what I can find.

CAM (Tito):

Okay.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I have a bag. I have a backpack. I will carry the spoons.

CAM (Tito):

There we go.

Rolo (Phil):

I come back out of the ship with my robe, you know, when you lift up the hem and then you just dump a whole bunch of stuff into the

Guide (Chris):

What what do you have in the robe? What do you carry?

Rolo (Phil):

I got spoons. I got some plates and some cups. I got some pictures from the walls. Part of a broom. I don't know if part of a broom is really valuable.

Lysander (Jay):

Well, it depends on which part. Is it the left part or the right part?

Rolo (Phil):

No. It's the top part.

Lysander (Jay):

Oh.

Squawk (Madeleine):

It's a weapon. We can always use more weapons.

Rolo (Phil):

And I got a a box that's locked, and the key I have doesn't fit it. And a compass, but it's broken.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Did you get the little spinny bally thing? There's a little spooky little devicey... We didn't know what it was for, but I failed...

Rolo (Phil):

I hold something up. This?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Totally!

Lysander (Jay):

Nope.

Squawk (Madeleine):

You're so smart.

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. Got it.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay.

Rolo (Phil):

Alright. Let's dump this stuff in a bag.

Lysander (Jay):

Squawk's got the backpack.

Rolo (Phil):

Okay. Good. Because I didn't wanna walk like this the whole way.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay. Fine. I will put it all in my backpack because I'm a fighter, and I am brave, and I'm not scared to carry the burden.

Lysander (Jay):

But if we put all that stuff in the backpack, how are we gonna put the stuff we find for the fix the boat in the backpack?

Squawk (Madeleine):

I will carry it with my very strong spindly feather arms so that you all will know how what a noble friend I am.

Rolo (Phil):

Hey. Hey. I just I just I just got a joke. She she puts the bird in burden.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Hey. It's fine.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Whatever makes people like me. It's fine. It's fine. We'll just figure it out when we find it. We should go.

CAM (Tito):

There should be a bunch of rope and stuff around the ship. Just...

Guide (Chris):

There's some remnants and...

CAM (Tito):

I'm just gonna coil up a bunch of rope that I can find and, you know, strap that on my shoulder.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Should we bring oh, no. I was gonna say weapons, but then I forgot I was a fighter. I have the weapons. So everything's fine.

CAM (Tito):

You are the weapon.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Just I am the weapon in case of things on the path that we might encounter that are bigger than squirrel size. Because we heard those noises. Right?

CAM (Tito):

Oh, Oh, yeah. There's all kinds of noises and eyes looking at us in the nighttime.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay.

CAM (Tito):

Hopefully they're sleeping right now.

Lysander (Jay):

They're just creatures.

Rolo (Phil):

I'm going back in for one more thing, and I come out with a frying pan.

Guide (Chris):

Nice.

CAM (Tito):

There you go.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay.

Rolo (Phil):

Look out. I'll bonk you with this frying pan.

CAM (Tito):

But did you bring any butter?

Squawk (Madeleine):

I just don't want anyone frying any we're not frying any eggs.

Rolo (Phil):

Is that how you bonk someone with a frying pan? You need butter?

CAM (Tito):

Yeah.

Rolo (Phil):

Oh, so their face doesn't stick to the front? No, that doesn't make sense.

CAM (Tito):

Exactly.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Butter. I'm a bird you guys.

Rolo (Phil):

I'm gonna hold the frying pan for now. I am a wizard.

Lysander (Jay):

Could use it as a shield. Strap it to your chest like a piece of armor.

Rolo (Phil):

In any number of ways. I will let the situation dictate how I use this frying pan.

Lysander (Jay):

And we could always use it as a frying pan when we get hungry.

Rolo (Phil):

Oh oh, that's a great idea.

Squawk (Madeleine):

But not for eggs.

Lysander (Jay):

That's what the butter's for.

Squawk (Madeleine):

We could fry squirrels. We oh, we already talked about that. Did we talk about it? Did we outlaw I don't remember if we outlawed the squirrel soup.

Lysander (Jay):

Well, I think we kinda poo pooed it for now because there were so many of them.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Right. And they're oh, and they were cute. There was a cute one. Yeah. Alright. I'm just saying push comes to shove.

CAM (Tito):

The sun's getting kinda high, which we probably wanna get going.

Squawk (Madeleine):

That's what I'm saying.

Lysander (Jay):

Let's go.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Let's go.

Rolo (Phil):

Okay. We're we're town, tower, or crash trail? Let's flip a coin.

Lysander (Jay):

Oh, I got one. I reach into one of my pouches. I pull out a coin.

CAM (Tito):

Do have a coin with three sides?

Lysander (Jay):

No. It's just a shiny round piece of thing. It's only got one side.

Squawk (Madeleine):

One side?

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. One side?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Woah.

Rolo (Phil):

Well, let me take a look at this coin. Woah.

Lysander (Jay):

It's just a round piece.

Rolo (Phil):

It does only have one side.

Lysander (Jay):

One side. See?

Rolo (Phil):

That is so mind bending.

Squawk (Madeleine):

And it's already labeled.

Rolo (Phil):

I say flip it.

Lysander (Jay):

I flip it.

Rolo (Phil):

We'll call it in the air.

Lysander (Jay):

And I flip it, and it just says yes.

Rolo (Phil):

Okay. We gotta call it in the air.

Lysander (Jay):

Wait. Okay.

Rolo (Phil):

CAM, CAM, you call it. Call it in the air.

Lysander (Jay):

Flip it again...

CAM (Tito):

I'm just gonna start walking down the trail.

Lysander (Jay):

...and it says, yes.

Rolo (Phil):

Okay. One more time. I'll call it in the air. Flip it. Crash trail.

Lysander (Jay):

Yes.

Squawk (Madeleine):

It's a sign.

Rolo (Phil):

Okay. Yeah. We I guess we do that.

Guide (Chris):

So, CAM's already halfway down it.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Hey. No. I have to go in the front. I'm the brave fighter. I will go in the front. I race.

Lysander (Jay):

We all turn to CAM and say, we're go... Oh, he's already going. How did he know?

Rolo (Phil):

Heads crash trail. Heads crash trail.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I pull all my weapons at once.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So the trail of destruction left by your less than graceful landing is easy to follow. The forest has been carved in a jagged line of broken branches, torn soil, and scraped tree trunks. Scattered about the undergrowth, you see remnants of shredded rigging, broken crates, and other small bits of the ship.

Guide (Chris):

The first stretch is open enough that you can still see the outline of the ship when you look back, but it disappears soon after you move further into the trees. The pale sap has hardened across parts of the trail, stretching in ropey strands and translucent sheets that look like cloudy glass.

Guide (Chris):

So there's definitely some useful material scattered down this trail, but it's not all easy to get. Like, some of it's stuck in sap, some are wedged up in tree branches, some's buried under brush and and bushes. So each of you, let's go around it and tell me where and how each of you are searching and trying to recover things. So let's start with you Squawk since you're in the front.

Squawk (Madeleine):

What was the thing you said is cloudy looking?

Guide (Chris):

So there's, like, where the sap where you guys hit the trees and kind of peeled off the bark or knocked branches down, a lot of the sap came down. And you'll notice how because, like, the sap hardens pretty quickly. You'll see, like, there's almost, like, some that are, like, kind of strands.

CAM (Tito):

Streaks?

Guide (Chris):

Yeah. Like, strands of, like, real thin sap. Looks almost like spaghetti that's kinda hardened, and then you've got, like, this almost like sheets that have kinda slowly dripped down and just have hardened.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I mean, I don't know. Is that useful? I'm a little nervous about sap because of my feathers, but, I mean, it's cool. I wanna I wanna be in charge of the cool stuff. So what's cooler?

Guide (Chris):

You are the arbiter of cool. What do you think is cool?

Squawk (Madeleine):

What is a weapon? What would be a good weapon? Let's all vote. I feel like that should be my

Guide (Chris):

Your daggers. Mostly.

Squawk (Madeleine):

No. But that are things I could use as a weapon that we can see ahead of us.

Guide (Chris):

I mean, the the stuff that hardens in the air is kinda brittle. So, So, I mean, you can break it like that, but you do think and you do think that, like, if it's worked in different ways, you may be able to turn it into a weapon.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay. I like it. To protect my friends. Alright. It's just kind of hard to carry, but I'm gonna I'm gonna that's me. I'm in charge of that.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. Alright. Rolo, what are you doing?

Rolo (Phil):

I'm looking for pieces of wood.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Rolo (Phil):

And I'm gonna tell you guys a story. What I do is I go after this piece of wood, and I grab it from the under these bushes here, and I pull it into the middle of the trail like this. See, I knew this guy. He would go searching for for sand crabs, you know, the ones that don't move much. And what he'd do...

Rolo (Phil):

Because they're big. Right? And you gotta dig them up from the sand. And he'd get one, and he'd squish it, and then he'd leave it. And then he'd walk along, and I get another piece of wood, and I pull it in the middle of the trail.

Rolo (Phil):

And he pull it in. And then so what he did is he'd walk along, and he'd get a bunch of sand crabs, but he wouldn't carry them till he got to the end. And then he turned around, and only then did he pick up all the sand crabs on the way back home. He was genius. Dude, saves you so much time.

Rolo (Phil):

So that's what I'm doing. Just gonna pull stuff in the middle of the path. I'm not picking anything up, and we'll just collect it on the way home.

Squawk (Madeleine):

That's totally so good.

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. It's not me. It's my friend, Steve Steve.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I wish I had cool friends.

Lysander (Jay):

Steve Steve work for you at your at your hotel?

Rolo (Phil):

Oh, I wish, man. Steve Steve was the best cook. But, no, Steve Steve and I, we go way back to oh, just after Wizard College.

Lysander (Jay):

Oh.

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. We were roommates in Wizard College, and, I don't know what happened to him, man. Yeah.

Squawk (Madeleine):

So lucky.

Lysander (Jay):

Maybe he opened a restaurant?

Rolo (Phil):

Well, you know, he always wanted to open a restaurant, but, yeah, he he he got really into illusion magic.

Rolo (Phil):

And then he forgot how to get out of places frequently. So he's probably lost in a closet somewhere.

Squawk (Madeleine):

This is sad.

Rolo (Phil):

That'd be so Steve Steve. No. They were great illusions, man. He's probably having a great time.

Squawk (Madeleine):

In his closet.

Rolo (Phil):

In in wherever he's stuck.

Guide (Chris):

So, Rolo, as you're pulling some of those the last branch out, this one kinda gets stuck as you're trying to yank it out.

Rolo (Phil):

Dude, can someone help me?

Lysander (Jay):

I go over.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I race to show off my helping skills.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I'm very eager to help.

Guide (Chris):

So you guys yank on it, and as you pull really hard, it kinda rips out like this big bush in a bunch of the trees. And with it comes, like, this small chest that was, like, all buried in the in the underbrush.

Rolo (Phil):

Score!

Squawk (Madeleine):

Is that from the boat? That's not from the...

Guide (Chris):

It does look like it was on the like, it does look like the same wood or similar to some of the things that were on the boat.

Rolo (Phil):

Oh. Oh. I tried the key.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Rolo (Phil):

I have a key.

Guide (Chris):

So you go to put the key in the lock, and it does work.

Squawk (Madeleine):

No way.

Lysander (Jay):

Wow.

Rolo (Phil):

I'm totally opening this chest.

Lysander (Jay):

You're the best.

Rolo (Phil):

Alright. On the count of three, one, two, big money, three.

Guide (Chris):

So you lift open the lid, and inside it, you see, like, a big coil of rope. You see a couple of, like, sealed tins that say emergency biscuits. And then you see a small little, like, wrapped leather satchel, and out of the top of it, you see, like, a hammer and, like, a bit of a wrench and some other tools kinda buried inside it.

Rolo (Phil):

It's an emergency supply kit. And it's locked? Who locks the emergency stuff???

Squawk (Madeleine):

Well, I guess you right?

Rolo (Phil):

What kind of a ship is this?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Wasn't it your ship?

Guide (Chris):

People were stealing the biscuits, man.

Rolo (Phil):

It's an emergency. Where's the key? I don't know. It's an emergency.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I feel like we should be positive.

CAM (Tito):

Gotta protect it from the squirrels.

Rolo (Phil):

Man, when we have our ship, nothing's gonna be locked away, man. Free for everybody.

CAM (Tito):

We have a ship, and you already locked the door.

Lysander (Jay):

Oh, yeah.

Rolo (Phil):

Right. Good point.

Squawk (Madeleine):

So...

Lysander (Jay):

But he left the hull open, though, so people could still come in.

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. I meant, like, people that are on the ship could have anything. Not not stealing sap squirrels.

Lysander (Jay):

But they're on the ship.

Rolo (Phil):

They are no bueno.

Squawk (Madeleine):

But, anyway, bonus biscuits. Do we...

Rolo (Phil):

Tools. That's cool.

Lysander (Jay):

We yeah we might need those.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Tools slash weapons.

Rolo (Phil):

I say we leave this right in the middle of the trail and pick it up on the way home.

CAM (Tito):

Put it right next to all the wood.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yeah. We worried about sap squirrel stealing our biscuits?

Rolo (Phil):

Oh, I will lock it.

CAM (Tito):

There you go.

Squawk (Madeleine):

So smart.

Guide (Chris):

That's why there's a lock on the chest.

Squawk (Madeleine):

That's so smart.

Lysander (Jay):

Lesson learned. See?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay.

Lysander (Jay):

Lesson learned.

Guide (Chris):

Alright, Lysander, what what are you doing? How are you looking?

Lysander (Jay):

I'm investigating well, while before this was going on, I climbed up one of the trees

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Lysander (Jay):

And find you said there was some stuff up in the trees.

Guide (Chris):

Yeah. So, actually, you climb up in one of the trees, and as you get up there, you see there's a crate probably about 30 feet above your head, like wedged into a tree.

Lysander (Jay):

Little crate? Wooden crate?

Guide (Chris):

Probably about a yard wide.

Lysander (Jay):

Okay. I'm gonna see if I could jimmy it away or get it untangle.

Guide (Chris):

It it's wedged up there pretty good. I mean, you could probably get it out, but I I you'll probably need to make a roll to basically extricate it and get back down the tree safely.

Lysander (Jay):

So what if I turn into a chimpanzee?

Guide (Chris):

Oh, that sounds good.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Oh.

Lysander (Jay):

So I shape shift into a chimpanzee.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Lysander (Jay):

And see if that helps. Do I still make a roll?

Guide (Chris):

No.

Lysander (Jay):

Oh.

Guide (Chris):

I I think chimpanzees are pretty good at climbing trees. I do believe. So you you climb up the tree and you grab this crate and so you get down.

Guide (Chris):

So you guys see a chimpanzee come down a tree with a crate.

Rolo (Phil):

I got a question. Is it chim-panzee or chimpan-zee?

Guide (Chris):

You'll have to ask Lysander.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Whatever he likes.

Lysander (Jay):

It's chimpan-zee.

Rolo (Phil):

Okay. Because I don't want to be offensive.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yeah.

Rolo (Phil):

I don't want to say it the wrong way.

Lysander (Jay):

Thank thank you for caring.

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. I mean, you know,

CAM (Tito):

So, do we know that he's the chimpanzee, or do we think it's a random jungle creature stealing our stuff?

Guide (Chris):

I I assume he turned into the chimpanzee in the tree since he was already halfway up the tree, which means you just see a chimpanzee.

Lysander (Jay):

I come walking I come down, and I'm I'm Ohh, ohh, ohh, ohh....

Guide (Chris):

Yeah, I was just saying, Rolo, when you ask about the pronunciation, you just hear that. Oh. Oh. Oh...

Rolo (Phil):

Well, that doesn't help me very much.

Squawk (Madeleine):

He probably looks pretty snuggly, though. Right? So I mean, I could always use a little a little hug. I mean, it usually works.

Lysander (Jay):

I see Squawk coming towards me, and I put the chest crate thing down in the middle of the trail because we're picking it up on the way back, and I kinda point at it and all the other stuff. And then I give Squawk a hug.

Squawk (Madeleine):

And I do not pay attention to the pointing because I'm so excited about the hug. I've been waiting for the hugs. I haven't had one all day, and it's, like, very furry.

Guide (Chris):

So Rolo and CAM, you see a strange chimpanzee hugging a flamingo.

Squawk (Madeleine):

That's a good hug. So much texture.

CAM (Tito):

What is going on in this forest?

CAM (Tito):

You don't know where that chimpanzee has been!

Squawk (Madeleine):

Listen.

CAM (Tito):

Can have all kinds of diseases.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Doesn't... it's friendship. It's all love.

Rolo (Phil):

So we don't know that the chimpanzee is a member of the group?

Guide (Chris):

I don't believe so. I mean, you guys were all just kinda randomly searching as you're walking...

Lysander (Jay):

The only one that has actually seen me shape shift is Squawk. When we first met.

Guide (Chris):

That's true.

Rolo (Phil):

I look around, and I say, Squawk, step back. I don't see Lysander. I think the chimpanzee may have eaten him.

Lysander (Jay):

And I just start oohing oohing on and pointing to myself.

Rolo (Phil):

It's clearly agitated.

CAM (Tito):

He's pointing at his stomach. I think he did eat him.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I mean...

Rolo (Phil):

Should we attack?

CAM (Tito):

Hold him down! Maybe we have to make him puke up Lysander.

Lysander (Jay):

I keep waving my hands around.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I lift up my legs, and I wrap my arms and legs both around the chimpanzee.

Rolo (Phil):

I'll get some rope from this chest.

Squawk (Madeleine):

What?

Rolo (Phil):

I'm getting some rope from this chest.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Exactly. Exactly.

CAM (Tito):

Get the frying pan out!

Rolo (Phil):

We'll tie him up.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I I do that deadweight thing that kids do when they're asleep, and I try to make myself as heavy as possible so he can't move.

Squawk (Madeleine):

He's way bigger than me, but I've got some sharp claws, so I'm kinda digging in.

Lysander (Jay):

As she starts to dig in, I start struggling. And so finally, I shape shift back into my human form.

Guide (Chris):

K. So you guys basically see the chimpanzee morph back into Lysander.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Oh.

Lysander (Jay):

It was me all the time. I could do that.

CAM (Tito):

You gotta say something.

Lysander (Jay):

Well, I was up in the tree.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I mean, you are very good at hugs.

CAM (Tito):

How are supposed to know if it's you or not?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yes.

Lysander (Jay):

Well, how many chimpanzees do you see carrying a thing and putting it in the middle of the road?

CAM (Tito):

We saw a whole bunch of squirrels carrying a whole bunch of things. So who knows?

Squawk (Madeleine):

What if we make a secret...

CAM (Tito):

We gotta get you, like, a collar or something.

Squawk (Madeleine):

...code. Yeah. Like, a thing. Like, do a funny gesture that says, I'm Lysander. If you do, like, this dance maybe, then we know it's you.

Lysander (Jay):

How's how's that go, Squawk?

Squawk (Madeleine):

If it is sort of like this, but I have wings. So...

Lysander (Jay):

One more time?

Squawk (Madeleine):

It may be awkward.

Lysander (Jay):

I didn't quite get it.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Listen. Why don't you decide that...

Rolo (Phil):

If he turns into a snake. How's he doing that?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay. Rolo, what's your idea?

Rolo (Phil):

I say we tie this bandana around his neck.

Squawk (Madeleine):

If he's an elephant, he could die. It would strangle him.

Rolo (Phil):

Oh, good point.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Our friend would die.

Rolo (Phil):

If he was a mouse, he'd just walk right through it.

Lysander (Jay):

And the clothes because my clothes don't shape shift with me. They all just kinda so whatever I'm wearing just morphs into the form.

Lysander (Jay):

I found this crate!

Guide (Chris):

And on the side of the crate, it says Gold Label on it.

Lysander (Jay):

Oh, there's gold in the crate.

Rolo (Phil):

How is the it says gold label or it there is a gold label?

Guide (Chris):

Yeah, it's stenciled. It says gold label.

Rolo (Phil):

And how is that written? Is it written in gold?

Guide (Chris):

Sure. I'll say it is.

Rolo (Phil):

And it on a gold label? Because that would be, like, meta.

Guide (Chris):

It it is, but it's on a tag.

Rolo (Phil):

Okay.

Guide (Chris):

They couldn't spring for the full label.

Rolo (Phil):

So the gold label's not a gold label? Got it.

Guide (Chris):

No.

Rolo (Phil):

Should we open the crate?

Squawk (Madeleine):

We have a key.

Rolo (Phil):

Here. Let me unlock this chest and get the hammer.

Guide (Chris):

There is no, there is no key. Though you could probably use the hammer and the tools.

Rolo (Phil):

In the other chest that had the tools.

Guide (Chris):

Yeah, oh yeah.

Lysander (Jay):

Emergency hammer.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So you pull open the chest, and inside it, there's just, like, a whole bunch of shredded...

Rolo (Phil):

Gold?!?

CAM (Tito):

Packing?

Guide (Chris):

It's shredded like paper and just like packing material.

Squawk (Madeleine):

We can do some crafts.

Guide (Chris):

And inside, you see a whole bunch of packages wrapped really tight in the middle.

Rolo (Phil):

Oh.

CAM (Tito):

Well, let's open a pack.

Rolo (Phil):

We should open these packages right now.

Guide (Chris):

K. You open up a package.

Squawk (Madeleine):

What if it's packages of bombs?

Guide (Chris):

As you do it, it unfurls, and it's a set of long underwear.

Lysander (Jay):

Oh, those are gonna come in handy.

Squawk (Madeleine):

That's so good.

Rolo (Phil):

So can I just back up a bit? Just for a second.

Squawk (Madeleine):

This is not what I was expecting.

Rolo (Phil):

Carefully packed long underwear so it would not get jostled in travel.

Rolo (Phil):

Is this fragile long underwear? Does it shatter?

Guide (Chris):

There's about a dozen packages in there.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Are they different sizes?

Guide (Chris):

Well, they're different size underwear, but the packages themselves are kind of packaged the same.

Squawk (Madeleine):

They're different size. So okay. Right. So they were do we think someone wore these already? Because...

Guide (Chris):

No. They do look new.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay. Because...

Rolo (Phil):

Gold label long underwear. Love it.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I mean, obviously, keeping this.

CAM (Tito):

Is it at least gold colored?

Guide (Chris):

No. But the label inside is gold.

CAM (Tito):

Oh.

Lysander (Jay):

Oh.

Squawk (Madeleine):

That's some fancy, fancy long underwear.

Rolo (Phil):

So I take the first pair of long underwear and check it out. This is what I do. I'm gonna make myself a satchel.

Rolo (Phil):

I knew this guy named Gus, and he could make satchels out of, like, literally anything, banana leaves or a larger satchel. He could make it into a smaller satchel.

Rolo (Phil):

Anyway, I tie the I tie the the bottoms of the long underwear together, and I put it diagonally over myself. And then I flip around the waist part into a little pocket. It sort of sits on my hip there.

Guide (Chris):

Alright.

Rolo (Phil):

Then I point at it and go, look. You can put stuff in there like other pairs of long underwear, which I do. And now I'm carrying them all.

Guide (Chris):

You just invented something new. What are you gonna call it?

Rolo (Phil):

Gold Label long under satchel.

Squawk (Madeleine):

That's so good. That's so good.

Guide (Chris):

Perfect.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Wow.

Guide (Chris):

I love it.

Lysander (Jay):

We we could probably sell those.

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. Yeah. Long underwear for carrying long underwear in case you need lots and lots of long underwear.

CAM (Tito):

If we ever get out of here.

Rolo (Phil):

In the jungle.

Squawk (Madeleine):

In the toasty...

Guide (Chris):

They're very stretchy, so you can fit a lot of stuff in that satchel Rolo.

Lysander (Jay):

Maybe we could use them for a slingshot.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yeah. Or, like, a hammock. We could make a fun swing for just for fun times with them if we hang them from our anyway, are there any that are bird sized is what I'm I mean, I my legs I'm very self conscious.

Guide (Chris):

There are some smaller ones. So be you'll probably have to take them in a little bit around the legs.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Alright. I know my legs are skinny. Okay. There's lots of muscle in there. Okay.

Guide (Chris):

Yep.

Squawk (Madeleine):

So we've got some long underwear. So should we keep looking?

Rolo (Phil):

This is great. We got so much to fix our ship. We've got tools. We got long underwear.

Lysander (Jay):

Yep.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Path was a this is a good path.

Lysander (Jay):

Biscuits?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yep. Biscuits.

Rolo (Phil):

Biscuits.

CAM (Tito):

We're still missing the important part.

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah.

Lysander (Jay):

What? What's that?

CAM (Tito):

The the boards with the the special material to make the ship float.

Lysander (Jay):

Oh, right. Right.

Squawk (Madeleine):

We...

Lysander (Jay):

Right.

Rolo (Phil):

I say we keep going.

Lysander (Jay):

Yes.

Guide (Chris):

Alright. So, CAM, what what are you doing, CAM?

CAM (Tito):

I'm looking around for the boards with that gray tint on them for the the material.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. You do see a couple of boards that look similar in shape stuck into some sap off on the side underneath one of the trees.

CAM (Tito):

Okay. Can I try to break it loose from the sap?

Guide (Chris):

Yeah. Yeah. So if you yank on it and you just start pulling and, again, the sap, when it dries in the air, it's pretty brittle. So you're able to kinda break it free using the leverage of the plank.

Guide (Chris):

It feels a little weird. Like, they're heavy, but they're not as heavy as they should be. It's like when you kinda drag it, it's almost like it scrapes across the ground weird. Like, the weight doesn't really agree with it.

CAM (Tito):

Like, it's floating.

Guide (Chris):

Little bouncy and little floaty on the end.

CAM (Tito):

Okay. So what I wanna do is I wanna find a couple of these.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. You can find...

CAM (Tito):

Using the rope.

Guide (Chris):

...three of them.

CAM (Tito):

Okay. Then using the rope, I wanna tie them together as, like, a little sled.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

CAM (Tito):

So that we could put all the other stuff on top of it, and we could kinda drag it back

Lysander (Jay):

Oh. Oh.

CAM (Tito):

To camp.

Lysander (Jay):

I could turn into a horse, and you could attach it to me, and I could drag it back up there.

Guide (Chris):

Ah...

Lysander (Jay):

I could get more.

Guide (Chris):

You can't do Squawk's dance if you're a horse, though.

CAM (Tito):

But she can ride him.

Squawk (Madeleine):

You can't you can't I, I'm so into that! This is great. I've never gotten to ride anything!

Guide (Chris):

She's got her helmet, she got her dagger, she just needs a lance.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yeah. I mean, I do have some spiky spur ankle things. I'll take them off. I'll take them off. It's I don't wanna spike my horse friend. Let's do it.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Turn into a horse! Turn into a horse!

Guide (Chris):

I don't think you have anything heavy enough to do that yet, but that may not be a bad idea.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Oh.

Lysander (Jay):

Well, we got all the stuff in the middle of the road that Rolo brought out.

CAM (Tito):

Yep. So I'm gonna push this little sled thing towards the other the other pile that Rolo built with all the other stuff.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So you guys have basically a giant pile of wood in a forest surrounded by flammable sap. So that's great. Let's leave that there.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Wait a minute.

Rolo (Phil):

That had the cadence of a warning.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I think he's trying to say. Can somebody do a no fiery spell? Is that a thing we can do?

Rolo (Phil):

Let me check my spell book.

Squawk (Madeleine):

A no.

Rolo (Phil):

Nope.

Squawk (Madeleine):

K. So...

Lysander (Jay):

Yep, nope.

CAM (Tito):

Nobody light a match.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Does anyone have any potions they can dump on it all to make it not?

Lysander (Jay):

Nope.

CAM (Tito):

As long as we don't set a fire, it should be fine.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yeah. Why would it just suddenly catch fire except that he said it? So...

Lysander (Jay):

Unless somebody else sets the fire. Maybe that creature that we heard last night.

Squawk (Madeleine):

That would be so mean.

CAM (Tito):

Well, if he already came through here, everything would already be scorched.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yeah.

CAM (Tito):

So we're good for now. Let's just keep collecting all this stuff.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Let's just be positive.

CAM (Tito):

Let's make a nice big pile.

Rolo (Phil):

Hey, I just noticed a tag on this long underwear. It says inflammable.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Uh-oh.

Rolo (Phil):

Does that mean it's, like, super flammable?

CAM (Tito):

Or does that mean not flammable?

Rolo (Phil):

No. It's like it's like inside flammable.

Lysander (Jay):

In?

Guide (Chris):

So only the interior of the long johns will catch on fire?

Rolo (Phil):

Flammable.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I'm a bird. So reading no.

Lysander (Jay):

And I maybe it means you put it in the flames?

Squawk (Madeleine):

We could try...

Rolo (Phil):

And that will stop the flames?

Squawk (Madeleine):

We could.

Rolo (Phil):

Okay. I'll I'll leave a pair of these long underwear. I'll drape it over the pile.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yes. That's perfect.

Rolo (Phil):

It will either burst into flames or it will stop the flames.

Guide (Chris):

Alright.

Rolo (Phil):

Or it will make no difference.

Guide (Chris):

So you guys have just left the weirdest emergency signal to anybody flying overhead in the world.

Guide (Chris):

Alright. So you think you found most of the useful items, but the crash trail still continues deeper into the trees. And as you guys are standing around there kind of debating what to do next, you hear a a high pitched frenzy whistling and warbling kind of further down the trail. Do you go investigate?

CAM (Tito):

A scary whistling or like?

Guide (Chris):

No. Like, very pitched... No. I mean, it sounds like something. Very kind of high pitched and whistling, warbling type sound.

CAM (Tito):

Was that you, Squawk?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Listen. I don't warble. I I'm not I don't.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I just I I mean, I will go investigate if we feel like don't really like I need to hang out with the warbly creature. But if people are worried, I wanna make sure we all feel safe. So...

Lysander (Jay):

Yes. We're worried.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay. I'm gonna get I have all my weapons. I'm gonna take a thing of the long underwear so I can use it as, like, a, like, a strangly rope in front of me if I need to, like, to wrap it around something to maybe tangle something up. Hopefully and I stride forward with as much bravado as I can muster. And... What happens?

Guide (Chris):

So you move down the trail and you're all prepared. And you arrive at a spot where kinda actually, you notice now, like, this is where the Distress actually came in through the trees. So, like, beyond here, it's just the actual forest. And you continue to hear, like, this high pitched twittering, and you see a small bush at the base of one of the trees, like, shaking back and forth kind of violently.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I throw the long underwear at the bush.

Rolo (Phil):

Hey!

Squawk (Madeleine):

Just just wanna I mean, I don't wanna engage in combat if I don't have to.

Guide (Chris):

So you throw it at the bush, and the bush just continues to shake and the the long johns kinda flap around like they're dancing.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Inconclusive. I say, hello, friend. Would you like a hug?

Guide (Chris):

There's no response. Just a lot of noise.

CAM (Tito):

Or another pair of underwear.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I hug the bush.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So as you get up to the bush and you're about to go hug it, you see behind the bush, there's, like, a fallen branch stuck to the ground and, like, a pool of the crystallized sap. And near the edge of the hardened material is a remnant of what appears to be a small nest. Next to it, there's a small brown and white bird, probably about the size of your, I was gonna say, palm of your hand, but about the end of your wingtip. And it's kinda whistling and chirping frantically, and it's it's flapping its wings wildly as it tries to hop free, but one of its legs is stuck in the sap that's all hardened.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I will help you, my friend. You are so cute. I'm sorry I threw underwear at you.

Guide (Chris):

So what do you do?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Well, I don't speak the bird language of this bird, but I do I try to look as friendly as possible, and I extend one of my talons for it to hold on to my toes and hope I hope it gets the message. And then I'm I my plan is to pull it out. It depends how stuck it is, I guess.

Guide (Chris):

K. So you reach your talon, and as you do that, it, like, starts nipping at at your your toes.

Squawk (Madeleine):

It's not polite! That is very rude.

Guide (Chris):

And it's still trying to frantically try to get out.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I...probably take some of my freeze dried shrimp out. I I toss one or two to indicate my friendly intentions.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So now let's let's pan back a little bit. So Rolo, Lysander and CAM, you see Squawk walk up to a bush, throw underwear at it, attempt to hug it, and then stick her talon in it, and then throw a freeze dried shrimp at it.

Lysander (Jay):

Does she do this often?

Rolo (Phil):

I don't know. I haven't... do I have I known her longer than you?

CAM (Tito):

Yeah. You've known her the longest.

Rolo (Phil):

Me?

CAM (Tito):

No, Lysander.

Rolo (Phil):

Lysander has. That's right. Does she do this often?

Lysander (Jay):

Actually, yeah. She hugged me was the first thing she did when I when I saw her.

Rolo (Phil):

So is she making friends with the bush or...?

Lysander (Jay):

I mean, the bush? Really? Maybe it's a talking bush.

Rolo (Phil):

I get closer to see what's going on.

Lysander (Jay):

Why would she throw the underwear on it?

CAM (Tito):

And shrimp. Bushes don't eat shrimp.

Rolo (Phil):

And I reach carefully to pull my long underwear back.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So you reach and you grab, and as you get up close, you see the little bird stuck in the sap behind the bush.

Rolo (Phil):

Oh, it's a bird!

Squawk (Madeleine):

We're friends.

CAM (Tito):

Yeah. We know she's a bird.

Lysander (Jay):

We yeah. We know that.

Rolo (Phil):

No. It's another bird.

Lysander (Jay):

Oh, no. Not another bird.

Squawk (Madeleine):

He's cute. This bird is so cute.

Guide (Chris):

So he's squawking, trying to pull, and, like, he definitely seems to be stuck pretty good.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yeah. Oh, no. Somebody do a bird saving spell.

CAM (Tito):

I don't know if there's...

Rolo (Phil):

You keep asking for a spells that I don't have.

Squawk (Madeleine):

All I do is fight.

CAM (Tito):

I'm gonna grab my little reflex hammer and just crack the sap that's around his foot.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Oh, that's so smart. That's so smart.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So you kinda tap around it and just kinda like you're breaking the ice around it. And slowly but surely, it just starts to deteriorate. And the bird starts to break free, and then it takes a few tentative steps and kinda hopping with a bit of a wobble, and then it takes flight.

Guide (Chris):

And it trips once as it disappears up into the trees above.

CAM (Tito):

And he's gone.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Oh.

Guide (Chris):

He's gone.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I thought we were best friends. Thought there was gonna be something. That's fine, fine.

Lysander (Jay):

Take heart, take heart that you freed this creature that would have died just laying there.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I know.

Rolo (Phil):

That's true. You saved, you saved this bird. It's your good deed is done for the day.

Lysander (Jay):

That's right.

Squawk (Madeleine):

It's just everyone leaves me, and it's fine. I just thought maybe maybe he'll come back. I just thought it was yeah.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay. Bye, bird. Maybe he'll spread word of our good deeds throughout the land, and we will become known as helpers in case there's any menacing creatures nearby.

Rolo (Phil):

We will become bird friends!

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yes. Hey. Word-of-mouth. Word-of-beak!
