S01E05 - The Sap Squirrels

Guide (Chris):

Welcome back to Legend Lunchbox. Last time, the S.S. Distress technically landed if you wanna be really generous about what the word landed means. The crew is now stranded in a deep forest on a strange world with a damaged ship, a few supplies, and a growing suspicion that they may not be alone. As night settles in around the crash site, eyes begin watching them from the trees.

Guide (Chris):

The eyes stay fixed on you from the low branches. For a moment, nothing else moves. The forest is dim. The ship creeks behind you, and the sticky sap on the broken trunks catches the dimming rays of light. Then one pair of eyes drops out of sight.

Guide (Chris):

A branch bends and leaves rustle, and something small moves from out behind a tree, quick and low. About the size of a large squirrel or a small raccoon, it has a narrow body, oversized dark eyes, round ears, a long striped tail. Its fur is a mix of soft brown and pale beige except around its paws where sticky amber sap has matted and darkened the hair. Its front paws look almost like tiny hands, and they fidget nervously as it stares at you. It freezes when it notices that you can see it.

Guide (Chris):

Then very slowly, without looking away from you, it reaches towards a spoon lying in the dirt. It closes both paws around it and eases back behind the trunk, slowly backstepping and staring straight at you the entire time. So what do you guys do?

CAM (Tito):

Thief!

Lysander (Jay):

Give me that back.

Squawk (Madeleine):

That is not nice. That is our spoon. You did not ask for that. That is rude.

Rolo (Phil):

Oh, don't get mad at the poor sap monkey.

Lysander (Jay):

It's a squirrel, I think.

Rolo (Phil):

A sap squirrel is even better.

Squawk (Madeleine):

It was my favorite spoon.

Rolo (Phil):

I look around for some other shiny object.

CAM (Tito):

Yeah. There's stuff scattered everywhere.

Guide (Chris):

There's lots of shiny objects. I mean, there's kinda debris and stuff all over the place.

Rolo (Phil):

I I reached down and pick up a looks like oh, look. It's a fork. And I hold it out. Here, sap squirrel.

CAM (Tito):

Oh, you're about to get swarmed.

Squawk (Madeleine):

We all step back.

Guide (Chris):

You begin to notice more movement around the crash site. Not huge shapes, small ones. A tail disappears behind a broken portion of the hull, and then tiny paws grip a cracked railing. Something low to the ground drags a torn cloth into the brush, and then a pair of eyes peek out from behind Squawk's boombox.

Guide (Chris):

They haven't surrounded you exactly, but they're just everywhere.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Don't touch the boombox.

Lysander (Jay):

I'm going to tighten all the pouches on my person, make sure everything's strapped down nice and tight.

Rolo (Phil):

I think we're gonna need some more cutlery.

CAM (Tito):

Do we have stuff around us to, like, make a campfire? Or...

Guide (Chris):

I mean, there's wood and..

CAM (Tito):

I assume there's debris and everything.

Guide (Chris):

Yeah. There's all sorts of stuff.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Well, I want them to get away from my boombox, so I'm gonna throw some freeze dried shrimp at them because it's my only boombox. And how can we have parties without so I throw some shrimp at them to get them to back off.

CAM (Tito):

So you're going to throw food at the creatures that are swarming us?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Well, then they'll maybe eat the they'll I just all I'm thinking about is my boombox. Okay?

Guide (Chris):

So all at once, Rolo, you hear a soft scrape and then, like, a tiny grunt and then a hiss from behind you inside the hull of the ship. Then a moment later, you hear something like tearing fabric.

Guide (Chris):

Squawk. Near the side of your dance party, two of the little creatures have found your boombox. One of them has both paws on the handle and is pulling on it backwards with its whole body, and the other pushes from the side, but mostly is just smearing sap all over the surface.

Guide (Chris):

CAM and Lysander, you both hear metal clanking above you. You look up and you see several of the creatures on the anchor and chain. A few of them are pawing at the thick metal links where they wrap around the high branches while others crawl over the anchor itself causing it to swing back and forth above the ship.

Guide (Chris):

Alright. So what do y'all do, Rolo? You're first.

Rolo (Phil):

I run into the ship following the tearing sound.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. Squawk, what are you gonna do?

Squawk (Madeleine):

I obviously pull out all my weapons, and I do a cool hero pose, which is hard for for flamingos, but I give it give it my all. I sort of put, like, a one foot up on a stump, and I go, ARGH! and I with all my shiny pokey stuff on display just in case they get ideas.

Guide (Chris):

CAM and Lysander, what are you guys gonna do?

Lysander (Jay):

So I'm gonna try is there a way to climb up to where they are?

Guide (Chris):

I mean, it's a the anchor is about 50 feet up in the air.

Lysander (Jay):

So the anchor is not part of the ship. It's now in the air.

Guide (Chris):

It was. It is now up in the tree.

Lysander (Jay):

It is okay.

Guide (Chris):

So it's like the anchor tore free from the ship, and it's kinda the links are wrapped around a tall branch, and the anchor itself is just swaying.

Lysander (Jay):

I'm gonna yell at the creatures. Get away from that anchor as I try and find a way to get up there.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So, Rolo, down in the hold, one of the little creatures has both paws braced against the pipe. Its teeth are sunk into the brim of your captain's hat, which is still wrapped around the leak. It pulls once and the pipe gives a thin hiss, and then it pulls again and the fabric starts to fray as a dark bead of liquid starts to gather around the edge of the hat.

Rolo (Phil):

No. Sap Squirrel, leave it. Leave it. Drop. Drop it. Drop it. I take the fork, and I show it the fork. Look at this fork.

Guide (Chris):

Looks at you. It's like...

Rolo (Phil):

Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Look. Come here. Come get the fork. Get the fork. Come on. Does it does it follow me?

Guide (Chris):

It's looking at you like it's definitely it's pulled back, and it's pulled the teeth out of the the brim of the hat, and it's staring at you.

Rolo (Phil):

I really do my absolute best to sell how amazing this fork is. I flourish it...

Guide (Chris):

Tell me how you're gonna sell it.

Rolo (Phil):

...with my hands. Yeah. And I hold it up, and I go, woah, fork, dude. Come on. And then I throw it out the door.

Guide (Chris):

And it takes off right after the spoon.

Rolo (Phil):

Nice. And I go run for the hat and try to pat it back down.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So you're able to kinda jam the hat back into the pipe. And the leak seems to stay contained, but the pipe is still giving off, like, a little bit of a hiss. But you think you've got it kind of sealed as best as you can.

Rolo (Phil):

Nice.

Guide (Chris):

Squawk. So as you've thrown the shrimp, they they look up and they're like, just but the boombox definitely is more interesting than a couple of pieces of freeze dried shrimp. So they're still they're slowly dragging it, but it's going really slow.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Despite my heroic pose, has anyone have they even noticed it? Have they looked at my weapon wielding? Or do they not care at all?

Guide (Chris):

There's one standing up on the railing of the deck looking down at you.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Does he look impressed?

Guide (Chris):

He does very much.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay.

CAM (Tito):

He probably likes the shiny knives.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Alright. So I am not a dumb dumb. So I am aware that a fork just flew past my head, and Rolo was behind me. And I know probably what that means, and a little dude zoomed past. So I'm so smart. I get the idea. I pick up what name a shiny thing nearby.

Guide (Chris):

Oh, there is, like, little bits of metal. There is, like, a buckle from something you don't know what it's from.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I pick up the buckle.

Guide (Chris):

Brass buckle. Okay.

Squawk (Madeleine):

And I throw it near the boombox over the head of these sap squirrels.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So it clanks on the ground. And then the ones that are sitting there, like, one still has the handle and he's still grunting and pulling. And the other one that was, like, pushing on the side is, like he just gives it, the side eye and then he darts for the buckle. And then the the one with the handle is like, they're, like, starting to chitter at each other back and forth like they're arguing.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay. So I go get my boombox.

Guide (Chris):

Alright. So you run up, as you run up, they, like, they, like, both both of them bolt.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Nice. Because of my fierceness.

Guide (Chris):

CAM and Lysander, what are you guys doing? The anchor's swinging ominously as more of the creatures start to run up and down the chain. And they're climbing up to points on, like, the tip points of the anchor, And they're pawing at the links, and it's just starting to, like, slowly gain momentum like a pendulum as it's swinging back and forth.

Lysander (Jay):

It's a big anchor?

Guide (Chris):

It's a big anchor.

CAM (Tito):

I'm just gathering up wood here. I wanna try to make a big bonfire out on the forest grounds here to hopefully scare them away.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Lysander (Jay):

So is it is the anchor total is it all metal?

Guide (Chris):

Yes. So, I mean I mean, you remember seeing the anchor for a little bit of time on the ship.

Lysander (Jay):

So I am going to cast a spell.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Lysander (Jay):

I am going to cast steel sprout.

Guide (Chris):

Oh okay.

Lysander (Jay):

It's gonna cost two action points.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Lysander (Jay):

So I extend my hand and I close my eyes, permanently turning a nearby metal object into a weave of delicate plants.

Guide (Chris):

Oh. So when you use adventure points, does it say, like, there's a certain amount of mass you can turn at the flowers, or is it just a metal object?

Lysander (Jay):

The object cannot have magical properties

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Lysander (Jay):

Or be larger than a door. Is it larger than a door?

Guide (Chris):

I'm gonna say it's probably about the size of a door. I mean, you can do part of it. So well, question. You won't be able to do the entire thing. Do you wanna do the chain or the anchor?

Lysander (Jay):

I think I'd rather do the anchor.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. I was gonna say the chain's probably a bad idea.

CAM (Tito):

Because then the anchor snaps.

Lysander (Jay):

Yeah.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Big anchor.

Guide (Chris):

So you cast it on the anchor, and all of sudden, like, poof, like, the bottom the hook part starts, like, sprouting all these flowers and then just starts wilting. And as you do that, you see these little critters, like, grabbing on, like, they're trying to, like, grapple to get themselves back up, and they're starting to run up the chain. And then you see them all, like, up in the chain kinda looking down and chittering and and making all sorts of crazy noises.

Guide (Chris):

But the bottom of the anchor is just kinda wilted into, like, these palm fronds that are just kind of drooping down lazily.

Lysander (Jay):

Okay. That avoids that crisis.

CAM (Tito):

Can I light up this bonfire?

Guide (Chris):

Sure.

CAM (Tito):

Alright. So I, you know, gather a whole bunch of some of the scrap wood and everything, put it in this pile, and try to fashion some a little border around it so it doesn't, like, ignite everything around us. And I'm just gonna try to find something to spark it up and get a big campfire going.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So as you do it and you spark it, suddenly it was like like, it it flares up really fast, and you notice that some of the things had some of the sap on it. And the sap must be very flammable because this fire has gone up like gangbusters.

CAM (Tito):

Does that scare them off at all?

Guide (Chris):

The ones nearby, yes. You still see a few of them kind of around the outskirts, like, scurrying about and, like, grabbing little bits and pieces and stuff that are laying around.

CAM (Tito):

Have they left the bulk of the ship, though? Like, they're not trying to steal any...

Guide (Chris):

Seems to be, yes.

CAM (Tito):

Okay. That was my goal is basically to try to preserve as much as we can.

Squawk (Madeleine):

But, also, campfire party.

CAM (Tito):

Well, I mean, we're need a fire for sleeping and everything else anyway.

Squawk (Madeleine):

And for parties.

CAM (Tito):

Sure. Parties too.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I just mean... trust me. It's our first campfire as best friends. It's a big moment. I feel bonded already.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So fire sparks up. Like, you get a glow around the area, and the sun's starting to go down. You do still see a couple of these shapes going around the edge, but then the last of the few small shapes kind of vanish off into the trees, and then the crash site gets a little quiet. Doesn't really feel safe, but it's at least quiet that, like, you can kinda hear the wind blowing through the trees and everything.

Guide (Chris):

So what do you all guys want to do next now that you've got a nice little fire going, crashed ship behind you, an anchor made out of flowers?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Hold hands and tell stories. Hold hands. And maybe So Hugs?

CAM (Tito):

Question, Lysander.

Lysander (Jay):

Yes, sir.

CAM (Tito):

You turned the anchor into flowers.

Lysander (Jay):

Yes.

CAM (Tito):

Can it turn back to an anchor? Or are we down in anchor now too?

Guide (Chris):

I'm pretty sure I heard you say permanently.

Lysander (Jay):

Permanently. Permanently.

CAM (Tito):

Okay. So I'm just gonna jot down in my notebook. I'm, like, making a list of all the stuff we need, and I write down anchor.

Guide (Chris):

Yeah. Okay. So your anchor is just like a giant spear on the end of the chain now.

Lysander (Jay):

Well, at least it's not gonna fall on our head.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yeah. Positivity.

Lysander (Jay):

See? I like it. And that's the least of our problems.

CAM (Tito):

Well, yeah, I mean, we're lost. We don't have a ship.

Lysander (Jay):

That's right.

CAM (Tito):

And there's weird monkeys running around stealing everything.

Rolo (Phil):

Ahhh... They're squirrels.

CAM (Tito):

Oh, okay. There's small little hairy things stealing everything.

Lysander (Jay):

Right. So the fact that we don't have an anchor, I think that's, you know, a good thing.

CAM (Tito):

Oh, it's okay. I'm just making a shopping list. I'm just adding it to our list.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Just for later.

CAM (Tito):

That's that's one of the minor things compared to our entire navigational system, all of our propulsion, the hull that's missing about half, and then just keep reading off all these things that we're missing.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay. Party pooper. But we have a campfire.

Lysander (Jay):

And a boombox.

Squawk (Madeleine):

And a boombox.

Guide (Chris):

As you're talking, you hear from inside the ship, you hear, like, the pipe from the hold kinda give another loud hiss. You hear somewhere in the cabin, you hear something, like, beeping and and kinda making, like, this weird distorted warbling sound. Up on the deck, you see, like, the rigging and it's got, like, the sap on it, and it's starting to kinda crackle as it hardens. And then you just see, like, a whole bunch of wires hanging out of the hull, you know, from holes in the side. So between the crash and whatever those little critters did, the S.S. Distress is living up to its name.

Lysander (Jay):

How much of our ship is coated in sap?

Guide (Chris):

A lot of the rigging and a lot of the so, basically and as you guys have some time to look around, you can see, like, where you hit the trees, most of those trees when, like, the bark got torn off, this sap would come out. So any when you guys crashed into the trees on your way in and the branches and broke all that stuff, sap kinda sprayed all over, like, the the deck and a lot of the rigging and the mast and that sort of stuff. A little bit on the hull. And, of course, there's some out on the ground, but it's not like the trees are just weeping sap. Generally, it's once like, if you break the branches or, like, you know, the bark gets peeled off, that's when it it starts kinda bleeding the sap.

Lysander (Jay):

I was just concerned we have this big open fire, and our whole ship is coated in sap.

Rolo (Phil):

We should move the fire.

Lysander (Jay):

That's highly flammable.

Rolo (Phil):

Farther away.

CAM (Tito):

So are there any parts of the sap that have dried off yet that have hardened, you said?

Guide (Chris):

Yeah. I mean, it it's some of it has, and it's, like, it's very crackly.

CAM (Tito):

I wanna take some of the dry sap.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

CAM (Tito):

And I wanna see if that catches as much as the wet sap does. Because if it doesn't, then maybe we could use this as a glue as long as we keep fire away from it until it dries.

Guide (Chris):

K. So how are you gonna do that?

CAM (Tito):

There's gotta be little pieces of wood and everything all over the place.

Guide (Chris):

Yeah. But how are gonna light it on fire is my question. You just gonna throw it on the fire?

CAM (Tito):

Bring it next to the big bonfire and see, you know, if it just whoosh like some of the other stuff. So I have one stick with wet sap.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

CAM (Tito):

And another stick with dry sap.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Which, by the way, I have feathers. So get back because I see. Feathers. I wanna know. I'm just gonna...

Guide (Chris):

Feathers and fire do not mix.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Gonna I'm just gonna watch this part.

Guide (Chris):

So, yeah, as you hold out the two sticks, the damp sap but it it's hardening relatively quickly. But the damp sap like, you can scrape a little bit off a tree nearby, and that kind of flares up real fast, like, where the stuff that's starting to harden, it crackles and it kind of smolders, and then there's, like, a little flame, but it's not ridiculously bursting. But as it starts to heat up, then it starts to sizzle and boil and then flame up a little bit more. But it's still not as bad as the the the damp sap.

CAM (Tito):

So we might be able to use some of this stuff to repair the ship.

Lysander (Jay):

Very nice. Yeah.

CAM (Tito):

You As long as we don't take any cannon fire and have it light up on us.

Lysander (Jay):

You know, back where I come from, my home world, this sap is or the sap where I come from is highly highly valuable. And that's why pirates came and wanted to take it from us.

Rolo (Phil):

Where did you come from?

Lysander (Jay):

Oh, it's came I came from the Misty Isles or Isle, I guess. There was only one of them. Yeah. We had the sap. It's all over the place. I reach around and I have a necklace. It's it looks like a piece of amber.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Mhmm.

Lysander (Jay):

Big chunk of it. Yeah.

Lysander (Jay):

Pirates came. Go ahead.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Is it tasty? I keep wondering. Maybe is it like I realized treats are not a priority.

Guide (Chris):

Maple syrup candy.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Is that what we're talking about? I've heard of this. May we didn't have maple syrup in my lagoon.

Lysander (Jay):

No. We never ate it, but it just hardens really hard, and it gets if you shape it, it gets clear. You could see through it. Yeah.

Rolo (Phil):

So and it was all stolen by sap pirates?

Lysander (Jay):

Well, they've they found a value for it. I mean, it's everywhere. Came you know, the trees exuded it. And at night, when it got cold, it all solidified, And pirates happened to stop by looking for food and stuff, and they found it, and they just keep coming back. And then they pretty much enslaved the whole island, and that's how I got ah...

Squawk (Madeleine):

Sap enslavement? That's the worst.

Lysander (Jay):

Yeah.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I'm so sorry.

Rolo (Phil):

You escaped the sap mines?

Lysander (Jay):

Well, it wasn't a mine. It was just it's all over. Coming from the trees.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Are very chill considering the trauma that you are recounting. I applaud your resilience.

Rolo (Phil):

We should go back, and we should free your homeland.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yes.

Rolo (Phil):

From these pirates.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yes.

Lysander (Jay):

That was the plan until I ran into the beetle island.

Rolo (Phil):

Right.

Lysander (Jay):

I had just got off escaped the pirates, and then Squawk runs into me...

Squawk (Madeleine):

Sorry.

Lysander (Jay):

...escaping the beetles, and now here we are.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Do you...

Lysander (Jay):

So I haven't had a chance to go back.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Do you need some hugs?

Rolo (Phil):

We should totally put it on the list of things to do.

Squawk (Madeleine):

After hugs.

Lysander (Jay):

After hugs and after getting the new anchor.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yes.

Rolo (Phil):

I I give Squawk a hug because she looks like she really needs a hug.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Oh my god, finally.

Rolo (Phil):

There you go.

Guide (Chris):

Squawk's been waiting for three episodes.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I hold on for a bit too long.

Rolo (Phil):

Dudes. Dudes, don't leave us hanging, dudes.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Come on. Come on. Get in there. Do they get in there?

Lysander (Jay):

Yeah. I'll be there.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. Okay. So you guys, as you're talking and and hugging it out, you can definitely see some problems. There's definitely something going in the hold. The cabin has got some noises coming from it. The deck seems to be a mess, and then the outer hull is kind of a wreck.

Guide (Chris):

So where do you guys wanna start trying to figure out what's going on with the ship?

CAM (Tito):

Well, I mean, it's nighttime still. Right? So we're not gonna be able to see much.

Guide (Chris):

It's getting there, yeah.

CAM (Tito):

So maybe we should just get some rest, come first light.

Guide (Chris):

Sure.

CAM (Tito):

We'll survey all the damage and figure out what we need to repair to get this thing going again. Because I don't know about you guys. I didn't really see any civilization when we were crashing into the place.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I had my eyes closed. I was a little scared. It gets it was scary, but I didn't smell any civilizations either. So, no, I don't think... I'm up for a snooze.

Rolo (Phil):

Yep.

Lysander (Jay):

Yeah.

Rolo (Phil):

I'm in.

Guide (Chris):

Alright. So the ship's kind of damaged. The air is getting cold. You know, every few minutes you hear something making noises out in the woods. Where do you guys... you probably have enough time to focus on one thing.

Guide (Chris):

Do you wanna try and make the camp a little safer? Do you wanna gather up some supplies? Do you wanna try and fix something on the ship?

Squawk (Madeleine):

Well, we don't want those monkey rat squirrel sap creatures to come? Should we do some kind of defense thing so they don't come back onto the ship while we're sleeping?

CAM (Tito):

I mean, we could take turns keeping watch or something.

Lysander (Jay):

Yeah. I think both.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Mhmm.

Lysander (Jay):

I think we should do both.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Mhmm.

Lysander (Jay):

Try to make some kind of shelter because don't know what kind of weather's gonna be coming.

CAM (Tito):

We kinda got the hull of the ship to use as a big tent.

Lysander (Jay):

Yeah. Is it secure?

Rolo (Phil):

Well, there's a lot of holes in it.

Guide (Chris):

Yeah. I was gonna say it's kinda full of holes. Some of the areas are giving off some weird noises. I mean, it's more shelter than outside.

Squawk (Madeleine):

But, like, could explode... is what you're saying. Right?

Guide (Chris):

I mean So The hold definitely has a little bit of a chemical smell going on. You know, the cabin is kinda drafty and and cramped. I mean, outside is definitely more fresh air and room, but you're gonna be colder and you're closer to the trees.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Which is where this creepy creatures are. Right.

Guide (Chris):

So up to you all.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Does anyone have a tent in their knapsack? In their any in their secret in their pocket?

Rolo (Phil):

Well, we got a lot of ripped sail.

Guide (Chris):

You do.

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. There's, like, ripped sails all over the place.

Lysander (Jay):

Make sure you add that to the list.

Guide (Chris):

Ripped sail.

Rolo (Phil):

But we are up one tent or several.

Guide (Chris):

That's right. Okay.

Squawk (Madeleine):

We'll we'll just tent it up.

Guide (Chris):

Alright. So you guys basically set up a makeshift camp. I mean, it's not great, but it'll keep you warm. It'll keep the elements off you. Are you guys gonna set up, a watch or?

Lysander (Jay):

Probably should.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I bravely volunteer for a first watch as the lady with the weapons.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Lysander (Jay):

Okay.

Guide (Chris):

Alright. So Squawk, you you set up on watch. Nothing really happens and it kinda goes through, you know, you wake up the next person and the next person.

Guide (Chris):

And Rolo, while you're on watch, you're walking about during kind of the quietest part of the night when the natural sounds of the forest kind of stop all at once.

Rolo (Phil):

Uh-oh.

Guide (Chris):

Like, silence kind of descends on the area for a moment and then far off between the trees, you hear something really heavy snap a branch with a big resounding crack.

Rolo (Phil):

I'm gonna let everybody sleep. No. Wait. No. That's not what I'm gonna do. I'm probably gonna wake everybody up.

Lysander (Jay):

Thanks.

Rolo (Phil):

Dudes. Dudes. Dudes. Dudes. Shh. Shh. Don't freak out. Don't freak out.

Rolo (Phil):

But there's something really big headed this way.

CAM (Tito):

Which way?

Rolo (Phil):

It came from over there.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay. I get...

Lysander (Jay):

What is it?

Rolo (Phil):

I don't know. It just heard a, like, really loud snap, and everything got really quiet, dude.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Okay. Okay. I get I I jump out, I get everyone to get behind me. Get behind me. Get behind me. Okay. And I pull up my my daggers.

Rolo (Phil):

How far can we see?

Guide (Chris):

I mean, your fire's probably low now, but you can see probably about thirty, forty feet out. You see the edge of the trees, but it's just dark, like, kinda blurry once you get beyond too far.

Squawk (Madeleine):

So we could go. Should we all go together holding hands into the trees to see what it is, or should we wait for it to come to us? Let's vote.

CAM (Tito):

If you wanna go to the trees, you go for it. I'm standing here.

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah, yeah.

Lysander (Jay):

I think we'll stay here.

Rolo (Phil):

No. I'll vote for staying here too.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I am I want to be with my friends, so we will be stronger together, but I still brandish my weapons.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So you guys stand there kinda calmly underneath your your little tent, You hear another loud snap and kinda rattling of branches following, but this time it's a little bit further away. And then slowly, whatever it was, it sounds like it doesn't come any closer, but the forest still stays silent for a while before it starts to slowly come back to life.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Phew...That's what we thought creature!

CAM (Tito):

There's definitely more than just squirrels out there, I guess.

Squawk (Madeleine):

It could be mama sap squirrel.

Lysander (Jay):

Maybe.

Rolo (Phil):

The queen squirrel. Maybe they're a hive colony.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Gross.

Rolo (Phil):

You know, like bees.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yeah. Bees are yeah. Bees are good.

Guide (Chris):

Bees are good.

Rolo (Phil):

And they collect sap. Woah. Dude, that makes total sense.

Squawk (Madeleine):

What?

CAM (Tito):

Do bees collect sap?

Squawk (Madeleine):

They collect stuff?

Rolo (Phil):

Well, I don't know.

Squawk (Madeleine):

They collect something.

Rolo (Phil):

Pollen. Pollen. It's called pollen.

Squawk (Madeleine):

It's a little like bees.

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. Well, I mean, these are squirrels, and they collect sap.

Squawk (Madeleine):

So totally. Totally.

Rolo (Phil):

This is yeah. I don't know.

Squawk (Madeleine):

We feel you. We feel you. Yes.

CAM (Tito):

As as they're talking, I'm just gonna go back to sleep.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So the rest of the night passes, and it's definitely not the most comfortable night any of you have ever had. You know, the ship still makes some strange noises every once in a while and the air gets pretty chilly. You still hear some small things moving through the leaves, and every once in a while, you'll see one of those little little sap monkeys skittering out of the forest and, you know, running back in trees. But eventually, the dark starts to thin, morning starts to come slowly between the trees and doesn't brighten all at once.

Guide (Chris):

But, like, the deep blue kinda goes gray and then it turns pale gold as the morning starts to to filter through the trees overhead. And then the crash site looks different in the daylight and looks less like you guys are in the middle of a disaster and more like a place you're gonna have to make work for a while. So how did the night go for you guys? Did any who who gets up first?

Lysander (Jay):

I will.

Guide (Chris):

Okay.

Lysander (Jay):

I... maybe I took last watch.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. Anybody sleep real bad? Anybody pretending that you slept okay? What's how are you guys? Are you guys morning people?

Rolo (Phil):

No. I'm out like a light.

Guide (Chris):

Alright, Rolo's still sleeping.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Pretending I slept well, but I had dreams of mean flamingos all night long from back home taunting me, telling me I was gonna fail, but I put on a brave face. And I get up, and I go and try and make everyone some breakfast because I like to help.

Guide (Chris):

Alright.

CAM (Tito):

I I was just standing in the corner, so I don't really lay down.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I don't know how to make breakfast, but, like, do we have any food?

Guide (Chris):

I mean, you got freeze dried shrimp. Right?

Lysander (Jay):

That's right. Yeah.

Squawk (Madeleine):

There you go.

Lysander (Jay):

Gonna rummage around is I'm I'm sure there's a galley or something on this. There was.

Guide (Chris):

Yeah.

Lysander (Jay):

So rummage through there.

Guide (Chris):

So you go down into the cabin, and the cabin's kind of a mess. Just tons of smaller disasters. You see, like, the bolted table is still in place, but the chairs and the pans and tools, and there's, like, broken bits of equipment kind of slid into corners or wedged themselves into piles. The stove is just gone. There's just like a big hole to the outside where the stove used to be.

Guide (Chris):

And then you also see on the sidewall, the navigation desk appears to have taken the worst of it. Some of the instruments are shattered. Others are still moving, but, like, don't really seem that useful. And then one dial just keeps kinda slowly turning in a circle by itself. And then inside the desk, you hear something with, like, a warbling little chirp going, like, just every couple of seconds.

Guide (Chris):

You look around, you can probably wrangle up some food for sure, but there's probably not a lot.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Are squirrels tasty? I mean, there's so many.

Lysander (Jay):

Could try.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Look. We'll go there if we have to. Right?

Lysander (Jay):

That might not be a good idea. If you get to catch a lonely one.

Guide (Chris):

Mhmm.

Rolo (Phil):

I mean, how cute are these squirrels?

Guide (Chris):

I mean, they look pretty much like a cross between a raccoon and a squirrel.

Rolo (Phil):

So cute.

Guide (Chris):

Yeah. Kinda.

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. I can't nope. Sorry. Can't eat anything that's cute.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I wasn't...

Rolo (Phil):

I'm a I'm an uglitarian.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I wasn't thinking it was going to.

Rolo (Phil):

I just can't eat cute things.

Guide (Chris):

I mean, there might have be a few that are probably on the lower end, like, maybe, you know, lower end of the...

Rolo (Phil):

Oh, so if we we find an ugly one.

Lysander (Jay):

Yeah.

Guide (Chris):

Yeah.

Rolo (Phil):

That's okay.

Guide (Chris):

Maybe one of them that fell off the anchor when Lysander turned it into the flowers.

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. Okay. Well, in the meantime, I'm gonna look, see if I can find some food that's been stored here or something.

Guide (Chris):

Yeah. So, I mean, you'd if you guys rummage around, you'll find there's not a lot, but there's, like, a couple of things of, like, dried crackers and, you know, some old rations.

Rolo (Phil):

Oh, look. A burlap sack.

Guide (Chris):

Yeah. Burlap sack.

Rolo (Phil):

There's a very moldy head of lettuce in here. But if you if you take away the moldy leaves here, let me just take away the moldy leaves. Wait. These ones are moldy too.

Rolo (Phil):

Hold on. Hold on. And it's gone.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Oh, I was so excited for five seconds.

CAM (Tito):

I wanna go kind of investigate around the ship, you know, looking at some of the foliage or if there's any plants that maybe look edible or anything like that.

Squawk (Madeleine):

When no one's looking, I taste the sap.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. I I mean, it does taste a little little sweet. Sweet. It's kinda crunchy.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Mhmm.

Guide (Chris):

I mean, it's not particularly tasty because it's got kind of, like, a gritty taste to it. Okay. Like, kinda like there's a little bit of, like, when you kinda look at it, there's, like, little flecks of bark and and wood and and dirt.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I don't care. I'm hardcore. I leave the dirt. Just get my keep my feathers away. But doesn't feel very nourishing. I just was I'm just exploring all my options.

Guide (Chris):

Yeah.

CAM (Tito):

Just try not to pick your teeth with those knives. Might make a spark.

Squawk (Madeleine):

You're always looking out for me, and I so appreciate it.

Guide (Chris):

So, yeah, you guys are able to find some food in the hold. And, CAM, as you as you're looking around, I mean, you see I mean, you definitely see, like, some berries on a few things, but a lot of the there's not a whole lot of, like, undergrowth because these trees are really tall. So it kinda blocks out a lot of the light. So, I mean, it's the forest floor is there's not, like, loaded up with plants and stuff. Few things you see, I mean, again, there there's a couple of berries here and there and, you know, some, like, wide leafed, like, low branches, but you don't see, like, any fruit or anything like that.

CAM (Tito):

OK

Guide (Chris):

I mean, you can eat the berries if you'd like.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Eat the berries.

CAM (Tito):

Well, I mean, do I recognize the berries or anything?

Guide (Chris):

No. I mean, they're strange berries. We call them that...

Lysander (Jay):

Strange berries.

Guide (Chris):

Strange berries.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Just eat one berry.

CAM (Tito):

I mean, I I I have some medical equipment and stuff with me. Maybe I could test it real quick to see if it's safe.

Guide (Chris):

Well, we've never actually figured out, like, can does regular food hurt you, or do you need food?

CAM (Tito):

Well, I'm trying to find stuff for everybody, you know.

Guide (Chris):

Oh, okay.

CAM (Tito):

Trying to help people out. Okay. And and I use food as a fuel source anyway. I can make kind of like a biofuel out of it.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Woah.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. Very cool.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Fancy.

Guide (Chris):

Alright. So you guys we'll say you guys can get together a breakfast. It's not, you know, a breakfast buffet, but, I mean, it's enough to keep your bellies a little full. So, again, you're looking around the ship, anywhere in particular you wanna try and look at first, or what do you guys wanna do next?

Squawk (Madeleine):

You mean in terms of repairs?

Rolo (Phil):

I wanna check out the squawky thing.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Yeah. What's the warbly squawky thing?

Rolo (Phil):

We still got a something works.

Guide (Chris):

I was gonna say a squawky thing. She's standing right next to you.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Oh my god. You guys about me...

Rolo (Phil):

The wor... the worbler.

Squawk (Madeleine):

There's a worbly thing, maybe we can eat it.

Guide (Chris):

In the cabin, there's it there's, like, a desk on the side that had, like, a bunch of navigation charts and a bunch of that stuff. A lot of stuff's broken, but there's a in one of the drawers, if you open it, there's just like this round looks almost like a round I don't wanna say like a a ball, but it's got, like, a little ring that goes around it. And as the like, a metal ring that spins around it real quick. And as it does it, it's like every time it goes around, it's like, It just kinda squeaking.

Squawk (Madeleine):

Is this a normal ship kind of thing? Captain?

Rolo (Phil):

Ah Yes.

CAM (Tito):

I I I think we figured out at this point. He's definitely not the captain.

Squawk (Madeleine):

But who else? I just mean, has he seen it before?

Rolo (Phil):

Yeah. I was gonna hit that with with the thing before when I was hitting things, but now I should probably not. So I'm not gonna do that. No.

Squawk (Madeleine):

That is so smart.

Rolo (Phil):

Other ways to deal with these objects. I don't really know.

Squawk (Madeleine):

I...

Rolo (Phil):

If we had some oil, maybe we could put some oil on it, then that would stop it from squeaking.

Squawk (Madeleine):

We could throw it against the wall.

Rolo (Phil):

Oh, wait. Where's this black stuff that came out of the pipe?

Guide (Chris):

Oh, there's still some down in the hold.

Rolo (Phil):

I go and I I put my hand in it, and I do that thing, you know, where you rub your fingers together.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. And as you do that, your fingers start to burn.

Rolo (Phil):

Okay. I wipe it on my shirt.

Guide (Chris):

Okay. So your fingers are no longer burning. But as you guys are standing there, you're looking at Rolo and you see, like, a little spot on the shirt slowly getting bigger and bigger as a, like, a hole starting to grow on his shirt.

Rolo (Phil):

Dude. Dude. My shirt, dude. Dude!
